Hangul · connected pronunciation
Common Korean sound changes
Korean spelling preserves the pieces of a word, while speech connects those pieces smoothly. Final consonants can move, merge, or influence the next sound, so fluent reading is more than naming one block at a time.
Liaison moves a final into an empty onset
When the next syllable begins with the silent placeholder ㅇ, a final consonant can carry into that onset. The final ㄱ in 국 connects to 어, so 한국어 is pronounced close to 한구거 rather than as three sealed blocks.
Neighboring sounds influence each other
Nasal assimilation, tensification, liquid assimilation, and palatalization make difficult consonant sequences easier or more regular in Korean speech. Learn each rule through a real written form and its connected reading, not from a romanized list alone.
The spelling does not become wrong when the pronunciation changes. It continues to show the word's structure while the sound follows Korean phonology.

Written and connected forms
Say the written word, then compare the connected pronunciation and the rule that produces it.
The final ㄱ of 국 moves to the following empty onset ㅇ, so 한국어 is pronounced 한구거.
Before a vowel, final ㅅ moves to the following onset and is heard as s/sh: 옷이 becomes 오시.
Before nasal ㅁ, final ㄱ changes to the nasal ㅇ: 국물 is pronounced 궁물.
Before nasal ㅁ, final ㅂ becomes nasal ㅁ: 앞문 is pronounced 암문.
When ㄴ and ㄹ meet here, both are pronounced ㄹ: 신라 becomes 실라.
Final ㄷ/ㅌ before 이 can become ㅈ/ㅊ; 같이 is pronounced 가치.
Final ㅎ combines with following ㄷ and makes aspirated ㅌ: 좋다 is pronounced 조타.
After final ㄱ, the following ㄱ becomes tense ㄲ: 학교 is pronounced 학꾜.
At the end of a syllable, ㅊ is neutralized to the representative final ㄷ sound: 꽃 is pronounced 꼳.
Between voiced sounds, ㅎ weakens and is commonly not heard: 좋아요 is pronounced close to 조아요.
